Lihuk Panaghiusa serves some of the most impoverished and marginalized communities in the Metro Cebu area, The Philippines. Cebu City is the oldest city in the country and Metro Cebu is the second most populous Metropolitan area in the Philippines after Metro Manila.
Poverty is the most critical social problem affecting our country. Despite recent economic growth, 2012 figures estimate that 27.9% of the population live below the poverty line.
We strive to help impoverished individuals and families reclaim their lives. We provide individuals, families, and communities with opportunities, training, social services, and development where there is none.
Lihuk Panaghiusa is an organisation based directly in the communities within which we work. Our beneficiaries live well below the poverty line struggling to sustain their basic daily needs of food and shelter.
From low-income families many scholars’ parents have to prioritize their economic activities rather than their children’s education in order to be able to subsist. Some of our scholars need to work, get involved in activities like rag-making, vending rags & cigarettes along the road, assisting their parents in hawking their sales and even scavenging. With these situations, we are challenged to uphold our scholars’ commitment towards their studies and patiently provide them the necessary understanding and support they need to succeed. We are continuously upgrading our program to offer suitable services for our beneficiaries.
We give priority to orphaned or neglected children within our communities. Due to the overwhelming level of need and our limited resources we only target one child per family unless there are extenuating circumstances. In this manner we can help to relieve the burden on a family so that they have greater resources for any other children. It also allows to have a greater reach in the number of families we serve.
At Lihuk Panaghiusa we take a holistic, family and community driven approach to delivering assistance. It is not enough to provide education and feeding programs for children. We know that they require additional social support and work with parents and communities to deliver this. We work with parents to help them acquire the means to care for their children. Through guidance and counselling, we support families as they develop income-generation initiatives and improve their parenting skills.
